While the majority of manufacturers are content to design look-alike mid-size SUVs, the unique and attractive Mazda 2017 CX-9 inspired the editors at Car and Driver to name the CX-9 as their choice for "Best Mid-Size SUV" for 2017.
The exterior exhibits the styling and details one normally finds in much more expensive vehicles, and the interior is inviting and roomy. On the road, it's easy to forget that you're driving an SUV since the CX-9 handles as if it were a vehicle that is a fraction of its true size. The turbo-charged 2.5-liter engine is designed for low-end torque, and the CX-9 delivers an EPA-estimated 28 mpg highway -- stellar fuel economy for a seven-seat SUV.
This was the first-ever Car and Driver 10Best Trucks and SUVs competition, which required that the editors amend their normal process for selecting entries. Next year, they plan to follow their normal procedure of limiting competitors to the defending title holder and any new or significantly updated vehicles in the category.
